Bill passed in Parliament, maximum age limit for entry into government service is 32 years.

A bill has been passed in the National Parliament, where the maximum age limit for direct recruitment in the government, autonomous, statutory government authorities, government non-financial corporations and autonomous institutions has been fixed at 32 years.

On Sunday, State Minister for Public Administration Md. Abdul Bari introduced the bill titled 'Maximum Age Limit for Direct Recruitment in the Government, Autonomous, Statutory Government Authorities, Government Non-Financial Corporations and Autonomous Institutions Act, 2026' in the Parliament. This is the first bill passed in the Thirteenth National Parliament. The bill states that considering the demand and necessity of increasing the age limit for entry into government service, the age limit was increased by two years to 32 years through the 2024 Ordinance. However, complications arose as some existing recruitment rules had fixed the age limit for entry as 33, 35, 40 and 45 years. As a result, inconsistencies arose in various recruitment processes due to the age limit of 32 years in all cases. To resolve this complication, a new ordinance was later amended and promulgated in 2025. The bill states that it is necessary to make the matter a law in line with the overall context of Bangladesh and neighboring countries.

The bill also states that increasing the age limit will increase opportunities for job seekers, create opportunities for educated unemployed youth to join the country's development, and help solve the unemployment problem. It will also have a positive impact on the labor market and the economy.

The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) is already conducting the recruitment process by setting an age limit of 32 years for direct recruitment to the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS). Due to this, it became necessary to convert the ordinance into a law. When Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed proposed the bill for its passage, it was passed by a voice vote of the members of parliament. In addition, the 'Government Services (Amendment) Act, 2026' was passed in the National Parliament today, adding strict disciplinary measures and a speedy investigation process to ensure accountability and discipline of government employees. Through this act, a new section 37 (a) has been added to the Government Services Act, 2018, which provides for action against activities that create disruption in the functioning of government services. According to the bill, if a government employee disobeys a lawful order of a superior officer or obstructs the implementation of government instructions and circulars without reasonable cause, it will be considered 'disciplinary misconduct'. If the employee is found guilty under this new provision, the bill has made provisions for strict punishment such as demotion, reduction in pay grade, compulsory retirement or dismissal. In addition, absenteeism from work in groups without permission or obstructing other employees from performing their duties will also be considered a punishable offense.
