Only a few weeks remain before the Football World Cup begins. Yet, there is still ambiguity regarding the live telecast of the event in Bangladesh.
The pressing concern for millions of football-loving viewers across the nation is—will this World Cup be shown live on BTV? Amid this situation, BFF President Tabith Awal has offered a ray of optimism. He stated that the government, in collaboration with Bangladesh Television (BTV), is making a concerted effort to secure the World Cup broadcasting rights. The aim is to guarantee that viewers in the country can watch the matches. Tabith Awal also addressed the World Cup broadcast during an evening discussion focused on foreign coaches and domestic football. He mentioned that the government's Ministry of Information has already taken action on this matter. Tabith Awal noted that the government does not wish for the country's football enthusiasts to miss out on watching the World Cup. Consequently, efforts are underway to explore various avenues for obtaining the broadcast rights through BTV. He explained that strategies are being developed to minimize expenses via advertising revenue, resale, or other commercial approaches. The BFF president further stated that consideration is being given to avoiding a substantial financial burden on BTV's own resources. Additionally, negotiations are ongoing to lower the cost of international broadcasting rights. In his words, "The matches will definitely be shown. We are confident that a solution will be reached through BTV. We are very close to an effective resolution." However, with just 24 days left until the World Cup kicks off, time has become a major hurdle. The cost of international broadcasting rights is also significantly high. Regarding this, Tabith mentioned that the primary challenge lies in acquiring broadcasting rights at a fair price and completing the payment within the deadline. He emphasized that time and cost are the two biggest obstacles at present. Nevertheless, the government and all relevant parties are dedicated to upholding transparency throughout the process. Several questions were raised about BTV's acquisition of broadcasting rights during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. At that time, the expenditure of approximately 100 crore taka sparked debate. This time, the government is adopting a more cautious stance based on that experience. Tabith Awal stated that there were concerns regarding some earlier transactions. Hence, the current administration does not want to engage in any process that lacks transparency or is unregulated. He stressed that while cost is significant, the transparency of the entire transaction holds greater importance. He also mentioned that the current government is striving to ensure transparency and accountability across all sectors. The same principle will apply to the purchase of World Cup broadcasting rights. According to analysts, World Cup football is one of the most widely followed international sporting events in Bangladesh. In particular, the enthusiasm of Argentina and Brazil fans turns the country into a festive atmosphere every World Cup. Therefore, if the matches are aired on BTV, ordinary viewers from various parts of the country will be able to watch the games conveniently. Meanwhile, football fans are now eagerly awaiting an official announcement. Even though the countdown to the World Cup has started, the major question remains when the final decision regarding the broadcasting rights will be made.
